What is Anjie C. Nkweti most passionate about?
She is passionate about getting kids to read. Every July, she organizes Little Letter Lovers, a book club for children in libraries across Cameroon. The sessions are filled with animated storytelling, puzzles, and quizzes. Anjie’s work inspires kids to explore the magic of books. This year 2024, she said the following captivating words for her invitation. “Getting kids off screens these days is like trying to get a cat to enjoy a bath. It takes a mix of cajoling, motivating, a touch of intimidation, and some enticing promises like, “It’s gonna be fun!”
Getting children to fall in love with reading, with all the competing forms of entertainment available, is another skill entirely. That’s why Little Letter Lovers in Limbe was such a rewarding experience.
The session began with most kids unsure of why they were there. Occasionally, one would sneak a peek at their phone, hoping for something more interesting. So, we became the entertainment!
The incredible coordinators brought stories to life with animated voices and dramatic actions. We added a sprinkle of motivational candy to keep the kids engaged and excited about answering questions. Challenging puzzles and quizzes kept their brains buzzing, while shelves of books offered endless adventure and discovery.”
What has been the most rewarding part of these bookclub sessions?
By the end of the program, one little girl turned to me and asked, “Auntie, are we coming back next week?” I smiled and told her no—but encouraged her to return to the Savvy Kwata Library, a cozy, artful space that invites everyone into the magical world of storytelling.
We are deeply grateful to Savvy Kwata for providing the perfect environment and resources that made the event a success. Parents and guardians, I urge you to nurture the flames of curiosity sparked in your children during these five days. Encourage them to visit the library and keep the joy of reading alive.
